What really matters…

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This quote became very important for me during the last weeks. I am still thinking about migrants, and refugees. This mail will have a little bit more of words than before…

A few days ago I had a nice talk across the fence with my neighbor who did some gardening enjoying the warm sun. One word led to another, and we rushed into discussing about refugees and people who are close to us. Refugees from all over the world is a hot topic in Germany and in Europe nowadays, it dominating daily news and talks. Out of a sudden we had things in common – over the garden fence: people who had been close friends, turn out to be opponents of immigration, their words and intensity alarmed me. And – words fail me.

Basically I would love to say: “What made you react that adamant? What do you fear? When did you start to react that sharply? I never expected words like these from you. What makes you talk like this?”

And I would like to continue: “These people from Syria fled the war. They lost all and everything. They set off to find a new place, find a house and a home, no more shooting and no further aggression. They want to have a job and they fail due to our overwhelmed system. They have left their families. As there was not enough money, only one of the family could start the journey.
Yes, our authorities cannot deal with these many people, or hand them a document that allows them to stay, or find a place to stay, or to help them to attend an integration course where they can learn and understand the language and culture, or support to find a job. Physicians, lawyers, cooks, engineers, artisans arrive here. They are not allowed to work, until they are not registered. This takes time, sometimes it’s really unfair, because people who arrived a year ago are still waiting for action and people who arrived a week ago get all the papers immediately. The narrowness and the uncertainty exasperate them, anger and impatience grow. Many move from camp to camp to be registered earlier. The only result: people are registered several times. From this the media concluded a headline: “More than 10,000 refugees have vanished, are disappeared.”

And I would go further on: “You had a real good education here in Germany, a humanist country enjoying peace for more than 60 years now. We have a home, a job and enough food. We have people who enabled this country how it is today: Humboldt, Heidegger, Goethe, Schiller, Einstein, Schweitzer and so many more. We are educated and this education enables us to get valid information and interpret the information. Why is it, you neglect this chance?”

I am so scared, that I quail, that I do not find the right words. It is so important to me, that we live all – many different nationalities – live together, introduce the culture of our country to people from foreign countries, learn about their culture to expand our horizon. I am from a motley family… we are from the Netherlands, Hungary, Czechia, Sweden, Italy, oh, yes, and Germany.
And no, I do not want, that the refugees assimilate with our culture and forget all, what they have been and been raised in. No assimilation, just integration. If we want to live in peace in this culture, in this country, it is time now to learn about other cultures, accept and respect them. Abraham Lincoln said: You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence.

Courage is more important than ever! Those who remain silent have lost the right to participate…

I decided to speak up. And you are the first who reads it.

PS: Sciolism is dangerous knowledge… so please, be prepared. First of all: research carefully and then: speak, or: Put mind in gear before opening mouth!

„Ice cream“ – Comfort for the soul

„Ice cream“ – Comfort for the soul

Recently I had a wonderful phone call with my buddy in Colorado. We know each other for more than 30 year and we enjoy my phone flat rate. And we love to chat along about the old times. Well, not only, we sincerely discuss modern politics.

This very day he said, he remembers one day – 30 years ago – in my home, when we had a look into my refrigerator. And, what did he see: A great variety of ice cream. He said he never could forget this view until today. Honestly? If you have a look into my fridge today, you still find assorted boxes with ice cream… chocolate, stracciatella, pistachio, egg liqueur, cookie and new trials. Okay, not all at once.

Ouch, my ears, I hear the shouting of people who are caring very much for healthy food and who are very figure-conscious. This is my answer: Mother Nature would not have invented fruits and honey, if she did not want us to eat sweet food. In the meantime our society is polarized regarding food. We talk about good food and bad food. Nothing is left in the middle. Most interesting fact: one food product belongs to both sides. Depending on the food directions propagated pineapple is good food on one hand and bad food on the other. Well, nice story, or not?

This eZine is about communication.

When I taught heavily overweighed people in a hospital, I learned about the importance of meals. Meals are socializing events. And they are communication.
So my students asked me: How to
• react when I am invited for meals?
• act at the buffet?
• React when I am offered food that does not fit into my food plan?
• Stand strong and keep track of my new food plan?
These questions derive from former times: a meal was the glue for a family or a small enterprise, a farm, an artisan. Today the exchange of information still happens during the social event “eating with others”. Information is exchanged in the canteen, a business meal is used to prepare or sign contracts, and it is family time. Enjoying meals is a social event and will ever be. It is communication.

So, what? Why not having ice cream with friends – just to communicate. ☺

Most of us have heard about Scheherazade, who told a story to safe her life. The sultan is fascinated by her tale, she starts to tell him during the night and she ceases talking in the morning. She so aroused his curiosity and he did not kill her.

BTW: The sultan is convinced, that no woman is faithful because his wife was unfaithful. So he marries a woman today and kills her tomorrow and so on. Scheherazade asks her father, the vizier, to marry her to the king to stop that insanity.

Supported by her sister Scheherazade tells the story for 1001 night and the king listens. During that time she bears three children and he is spellbound. Finally he is convinced by her faithfulness.

This is awesome, isn’t it? What do you think: our marketing and advertising could be a very attractive using storytelling, stories about den entrepreneur, the enterprise, the products, and all imparts knowledge and is educational TV?

Today’s marketing fears to take this step. Anyway, any time has its pioneers. And these pioneers bravely move into this direction and use storytelling as another pillar in marketing.

Scheherazade had to trust the power of her words and her voice. Well looking at the result she was very successful. Today we have even more possibilities to intensify the spoken words, that create the pictures in our heads. We know photos and videos. All together helps us to create our own pictures.

Do you have a picture in your head of your enterprise and about you as an entrepreneur? Do you want to excel from the crowd and follow new paths? Do you want to share your pictures with your customers and business partners? Yes? Please answer to that mail.

Yours sincerely,

I REPEAT! Beware, this is a German woman trying to communicate clearly in English…

How long do we continue pretending not to see, hoping that everything comes to a good end without doing anything? How much has to happen until we dare civil courage? When are we encouraged to stand up for a society worth living? When do we stand up for living in peace together?

A few days ago a picture appeared in the media: a little Syrian boy was washed ashore – dead. As presorted most people watched paralyzed and it took some time until a single person cared for the tiny body. Unfortunately we realize the dimension of a catastrophe (refugees/immigrants) when children die. Seems to be the character of today’s society and culture. I ask myself, is there any necessity for such a bad outcome to wake up. Are we so blunt, that we need extreme stimuli?

I am astonished watching all the initiatives in the Mediterranean Sea. I honor the people who help the boat people here. They put themselves into danger to rescue these refugees – similar to the refugees who risk their life. To maintain such a big ship you need 500,00 USD each month. From Germany started the Sea Watch, a private initiative to the Mediterranean Sea, and other private initiatives.

Decades ago Cap Anamur by Rupert Neudeck rescued the Boat People from Vietnam. This organization still exists Organisation Cap Anamur . They had a lot of legal trouble. Somehow it is forbidden to rescue people and bring them into any harbor.

When do we understand, that in today’s world we experience a Völkerwanderung (mass migration) of incredible dimensions? When do we understand that this world, Mother Earth, was made for all of us? When? The following video shows what happened during the last centuries:

Migrations of th elast centuries found on “the creatorsproject.com”

Actions (e.g. look away, stand still), pictures, music, lyrics, videos, everything is communication. Posture, gestures and your voice represent the largest part of your communication repertoire.

We have to learn now to use our abilities of communication for a better world, a world where all people live in peace independently of their mindsets and convictions. At last: Pope Francis told all priest’s offices, monasteries and pilgrimage sites in Europe to accommodate a family of refugees.

Peace for all the living beings in this world

Yours

Fuck Up Nights – A New Approach to Openness

I stumbled across Fuck Up, when I searched for a film studio in Munich. This name made me curious! So I surfed for a while, found some meeting announcements, and learned that this movement started in Mexico. Via the newsletter further events were announced, for Germany two or three… Not that much to be excited about. My friend wrote: “Cologne or Recife?” Which one is easier to reach. What decision should we make? After all this research I found a book published by the organization: http://fuckupnights.com

I was fascinated by these Fuck Up Nights? Ooooh, I haven’t told you any details about Fuck Up Nights… pretty simple: It is the art of failure in business and this art is shared openly with the public, this is what Fuck Up Nights are about.

Who dares to admit that (s)he miserably failed? Only very few people do. Or do you have a different point of you on this.

I think, we need a new kind of honesty. We need courage to do some frank talking. We need courage, to accept responsibility for ourselves. We need courage to raise our voice against injustice. We need courage to support others. We need courage to have the guts.

Congratulations to the Fuck Up movement. Entrepreneurs talk about their biggest mistakes and misfortunes. On the website I found an entry that said: “My biggest mistake was my thesis for diploma.” Well, yes… this man built a new inspired business and at the same time he wrote his thesis. He miserably failed doing both at the same time. And this was his conclusion from the experience.

Communication needs the guts to be honest and open AND it is accompanied by appreciation and esteem.

Yours
